Wittmann, 2022
We started this project in June 2018 visiting Wittmann headquarter in Estdorf and then the Showroom in Vienna right beside the Secession building. Before leaving the city we also visited the MAK Museum in Vienna breathing the air of the Viennese decorative arts of the 19th 20th century. There were a lot of fantastic pieces from the Bidermeier, Jugendstil and Art decò periods. In some way this trip influenced since the beginning our ideas about the new project. The sinuosity of some Bidermeier legs and backrests, the super-comfort of the seat cushions and especially one famous chair caught our attention: Fledermaus Chair by Josef Hoffmann. We liked the proportions, the compact dimensions and the simplicity of the elements. Carinzia Chair is based on a very simple frame which traces a broad outline of the Hoffmann chair but with different proportions. We designed it compact and light despite the thickness of the legs. To achieve this goal and make it special and contemporary we worked a lot on the dimensions and the shaped sections of the legs and backrest. We also focused on joint detail between leg and backrest like one looks like just put on the other without screws. The typology of Carinzia is in between a easy chair and a armchair with a soft cushion. Although it looks thin, it is not. It is quite high where you seat and very comfortable like the most Wittmann pieces. During these two years and half we spent on this project, we drafted a possible collection that has the same features. We took out from it the Carinzia stool in view of the Cologne IMM. We didn’t change the cushion to preserve the same comfort of the chair. We modified only the frame which fits perfectly with the chair. In general, this collection could easily work either for the contract and residential markets.
